Titanium Grade 5 & Grade 23 (ELI) – Ti-6Al-4V – Properties, applications and technical data
Titanium Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) is a high-strength titanium alloy used in applications where low weight, high strength and good corrosion resistance are required. It is the most widely used titanium alloy globally and is found primarily in the aerospace, medical technology and industrial sectors. Titanium Grade 23 (Ti-6Al-4V ELI) is a purer variant with improved toughness and biocompatibility, particularly suited to medical and safety-critical applications.
Together, Grade 5 and Grade 23 cover a wide range of applications within the aerospace, medical technology, marine and offshore, energy and other high-performance industrial sectors.
What are Grade 5 and Grade 23 titanium?
Both Grade 5 and Grade 23 titanium are alpha+beta alloys in which aluminium stabilises the alpha phase and vanadium stabilises the beta phase. The difference between the materials lies primarily in their content of interstitial elements. The ELI variant (Grade 23) has lower oxygen and iron contents, which provide better toughness, ductility and fatigue strength.
- Type: Titanium alloy (alpha+beta)
- Alloy: Ti-6Al-4V / Ti-6Al-4V ELI
- Structure: Alpha+beta (hexagonal + cubic)
- Designations: Titanium Grade 5, Titanium Gr5, Titanium Grade 23, Titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V, Ti-6Al-4V ELI, UNS R56400 / R56401, Material No. 3.7165 / 3.7164
- Common standards: ASTM B265, ASTM B348, ASTM B381, ASTM B367, AMS 4911, AMS 4928, AMS 4930, ASTM F136, ISO 5832-3
What is the difference between Grade 5 and Grade 23 (ELI)?
- Grade 5: Standard alloy for structural and industrial applications
- Grade 23 (ELI): A lower content of interstitial elements provides improved toughness and biocompatibility
- Grade 23 is primarily used in medical and safety-critical applications
What are the advantages of Grade 5 titanium?
- High strength-to-weight ratio
- Good fatigue strength
- Good corrosion resistance in marine and industrial environments
- Can be heat-treated to optimise mechanical properties
- Grade 23 offers improved toughness and biocompatibility
What are the limitations of Grade 5 titanium?
- Lower corrosion resistance than commercially pure titanium grades in certain chemical environments
- More demanding machining compared to CP titanium
- Higher material cost than simpler titanium grades
When should one choose Grade 5 titanium?
- For applications where high strength and low weight are crucial
- Under high mechanical loads
- In aerospace applications
- When strength is prioritised over maximum corrosion resistance
When should you not choose Titanium Grade 5?
- In certain aggressive chemical environments where CP titanium performs better
- When cost is a decisive factor
- For simpler applications where a lower grade of titanium is sufficient
Typical areas of application
Aerospace industry
Structural components, fasteners, engine parts and landing gear where low weight and high strength are crucial.
Medical technology and implants
Implants, prostheses and surgical instruments, particularly using Grade 23 (ELI).
Marine and offshore
High-load components in marine environments where both mechanical strength and corrosion resistance are required.
Energy and industry
Components for turbines, pressure vessels and advanced machine parts in demanding environments.
