Tungsten / Wolfram – W
Tungsten, also known as Wolfram, is a metallic element known for its extremely high melting point (over 3400°C), outstanding hardness and exceptional strength properties at high temperatures. It is one of the heaviest and most heat-resistant materials commercially available.
Due to its low thermal expansion, high electrical conductivity and resistance to creep, tungsten is often used in environments where other metals would deform or break down. The material is also highly resistant to erosion, plasma temperatures and corrosion from liquid metals.
Tungsten is non-magnetic and works excellently in vacuum or high-temperature environments where stability and longevity are crucial. It is also biologically inert, making it suitable for certain medical applications.
- Electrical contacts and filaments
- Components for the aerospace and defense industry
- Heat shields, electrodes and vacuum equipment
- Weights, balance blocks and projectiles
- Welding and cutting technology (e.g. TIG electrodes)
