Nickel alloy Monel® 400 – Properties, applications and technical data
Monel® 400 is a nickel-copper alloy with very good corrosion resistance in marine and chemical environments.
The material combines high strength with excellent resistance to seawater, saline solutions, alkalis and many acids. It is widely used in the marine industry, chemical process industry, energy and offshore where operational reliability and long service life are crucial.
Properties of Monel® 400
Monel® 400 is a solid solution hardened nickel alloy where copper provides improved resistance to reducing environments. The alloy retains good mechanical strength over a wide temperature range and exhibits very good toughness even at low temperatures.
The material is particularly known for its resistance to seawater and chloride-containing environments, making it suitable for marine applications.
Type: Nickel-copper alloy
Alloy: Ni-Cu (Monel® 400)
Structure: Austenitic nickel-based alloy
Designations: Monel® 400, UNS N04400, Werkstoffnr 2.4360 / 2.4361
Standards: ASTM B127, ASTM B164, ASTM B165, ASTM B725
Advantages
- Excellent resistance to seawater and saline solutions
- Very good resistance to alkalis and reducing acids
- Good toughness even at low temperatures
- Good weldability and formability
- Stable performance in both marine and chemical environments
Limitations
- Limited resistance in strongly oxidizing acids (e.g. nitric acid)
- Lower strength than some high-alloy superalloys
- Higher material cost than standard stainless steels
Typical applications
Marine industry
Propeller shafts, pumps, valves and components in seawater environments.
Chemical process industry
Heat exchangers, tanks and piping in alkalis and reducing acids.
Oil & Gas
Equipment in offshore applications and systems with chloride-containing environments.
Energy & Power Generation
Components where corrosion resistance and strength over time are required.
Corrosion Resistance
Monel® 400 offers very good resistance to seawater, brines, sulfuric acid and alkalis. The alloy is particularly effective in reducing environments and has a long proven service life in marine applications.
However, the material has limited resistance in strongly oxidizing acids such as concentrated nitric acid.
Environments where Monel® 400 performs well
- Seawater and marine environments
- Chloride-containing solutions
- Alkaline environments
- Reducing acids
Environments to avoid
- Strongly oxidizing acids
- Applications where higher strength is required than the material can offer
