Titanium Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) is a high-strength titanium alloy used in applications where low weight, high strength and good corrosion resistance are required. It is the most widely used titanium alloy globally and is found primarily in the aerospace, medical device and industrial sectors. Titanium Grade 23 (Ti-6Al-4V ELI) is a purer variant with improved toughness and biocompatibility, particularly suited to medical and safety-critical applications.
Together, Grade 5 and Grade 23 cover a wide range of applications within the aerospace, medical technology, marine and offshore, energy and other high-performance industrial sectors.
What are Titanium Grade 5 and Grade 23?
Both Titanium Grade 5 and Grade 23 are alpha+beta alloys in which aluminium stabilises the alpha phase and vanadium stabilises the beta phase. The difference between the materials lies primarily in their content of interstitial elements. The ELI variant (Grade 23) has lower oxygen and iron contents, which provides better toughness, ductility and fatigue strength.
